Food for your chinchilla E-mail

Chinchilla’s are herbivores.
Their basic diet consists of alfalfa pellets that you can get from the pet store. In addition to the pellets add Timothy Hay to their diets. Certain grains and oat groats, rolled oats and wheat can be given to the chinchillas but only in a limited amount maybe a once a week and very little.

Chinchillas also like fruits. You can add carrots, apples, pears and bananas as a treat to their diet. A raison or two (remember they have small tummies) would be a great treat once a week.

Also providing your chinchillas with vitamins and supplements only recommended by a vet or a pet store should be given. Though Chinchillas are not supposed to get wet they are allowed to have water. Make sure the water bottle is tight no leaks or spills, the first sign of a leak change the bottle, you really don’t want to take the chance of your pet getting wet and having their fur mold up. Make sure their water stays fresh, the bacteria that sits in water is not good for their systems.

It is ok to give your chinchilla treats but keep in mind that these pets are nocturnal so make sure you give them treats during the day when you can catch them up so they will learn to associate you with a treat.

You can also let your chinchilla chew on un-splintered wood treats, these are good for their teeth and one or two a week will not hurt. Sometimes your pet will let you know it wants a wooden treat by clasping the cage in its mouth and it will bang the cage.

Make sure you buy the Aspen wood chips because chinchillas tend to eat their bedding and pine and cedar chips can make them sick.
